The cultural celebration of Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead is a tradition that originated in Mexico and is still practiced among indigenous people there and around North America. It is connected to the Catholic holiday of All Saints Day celebrated each year worldwide. The Dia de los Muertos tradition focuses not on death but on the lives of loved ones who have passed. Ofrendas (shrines/offerings) can honor anyone from relatives to political and historic icons, and more. Using photographs and artwork, along with decorations, flowers, candles and food are often placed on the ofrenda to remember loved ones.

This year’s ofrendas made by local artists will be on display in the gallery until Wednesday, November 18, 2020. The gallery at South Broadway Cultural Center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Watch a virtual tour of the exhibit featuring interviews with the local artists who created the ofrendas.
