Penguin Chill Closed Until Further Notice

The decision was made to help prevent the spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), which is a highly contagious viral disease also referred to as avian flu.

Oct. 11, 2022 - Penguin Chill at the Zoo will be closed until further notice. This decision was made to help prevent the spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), which is a highly contagious viral disease also referred to as avian flu. HPAI has a high mortality rate in birds. The ABQ BioPark is keeping a close eye on reports of HPAI in New Mexico, and the decisions to move birds inside and to close Penguin Chill were made out of an abundance of caution. No birds under the care of the ABQ BioPark have exhibited any symptoms of the viral disease.
