It's Ape-ril! Time to celebrate Great Apes at the ABQ BioPark Zoo

Annual Great Ape-ril event aims to raise awareness and funds for great ape conservation.
March 29, 2024

Every year since 2016, the ABQ BioPark has hosted Great Ape-ril, a celebration of great apes. Great apes include; gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, and of course, humans. So far the event has raised over $45,000 for great ape conservation.

All through the month of April, the primate animal care staff offers special opportunities for zoo guests to learn more about great apes.

"Great Ape-ril is all about helping our guests make connections with great apes. " Said Josephine Frentzel, assistant curator of primates. "We get to spend every day with these amazing animals and this event helps us bring you a little closer, too. Together, we can all help these endangered species."

During select Saturdays the primate animal care staff, education staff, and volunteers will host special Discovery Stations near the primate habitats where guests can have their questions answered, explore biofacts and learn how to protect these amazing animals. All Saturday events are included with regular admission.

For guests who want to dive deeper and make a larger difference for great ape conservation, the primate animal care staff is offering a more exclusive tour of the public primate areas. These tours will provide a more intimate chance to talk with the primate caregivers and get to know more about each of the species and the personalities of the great apes at the ABQ BioPark. Your Sunday tour includes admission, book here!
