Holiday Jazz Brings Cool Yule to the Alvarado Transportation Center on Thursday, Dec. 12
At first sound, the music itself may not evoke sleigh bells and candy canes. But once you hear the jazz peal through the fountain area of the Alvarado Transportation Center, you’ll know it’s the kind of music capable of putting you in a holiday mood.
That’s what the Paul Gonzales Jazz Quartet will do at First and Central SW at noon on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013. They plan a jazz holiday celebration that will put a cool spin on some of the most cherished songs of the holiday season. But it wouldn’t be a jazz performance if they didn’t do some other jazz standards as well.
The Paul Gonzales Jazz Quartet is a collection of some of Albuquerque’s most accomplished jazz musicians. Paul Gonzales himself is regarded as one of the area’s preeminent musicians. A native of Albuquerque, he began his professional career over 30 years ago as a jazz trumpet soloist with the Army Band of New England. Among his other accomplishments, he is an educator who has served as adjunct trumpet professor at Northern New Mexico College in Española, a teacher at the Outpost Performance Space’s Jazz Education program and as a regular jazz radio host on KUNM, 89.9 FM. He is also a retired Albuquerque firefighter.
Gonzales most recently performed at the Alvarado Transportation Center in October as a member of the salsa band Jackie Zamora and Calle 66. His quartet includes keyboardist Steve Figueroa, bassist Colin Deuble and drummer James Gonzales.
Come experience a rare take on the music of the holidays that’s still sure to put you in a holiday mood!
