Ben Roybal works at the Wells Park Community Center in the Department of Family and Community Services.
On Monday, March 8th, Ben was supervising a game of soccer outdoors in the park that adjoins the community center. As he was watching the children enjoy being outside in the sunshine, one of the little girls who’s enrolled in our before and after school program at the Center approached Ben. She didn’t say a word and Ben immediately noticed that she looked like she was in some distress. Ben went into emergency action and began administering the Heimlich maneuver. To everyone’s relief, the maneuver worked, out popped a piece of candy and our little student was able to breathe again.
Ben used the training he received and was able to stay calm, think rationally, and save this girl’s life.
