Westside Emergency Housing Center Reopens Ahead of Storm

Safety measures put in place at the center after a recent COVID-19 spike to allow for the safe return of center guests.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The City of Albuquerque announced today that the Westside Emergency Housing Center (WEHC) has resumed operations as of Sunday, October 25, 2020. Transportation schedules and pickup locations have also resumed normal operations. The announcement of normal WEHC operations came just ahead of the cold snap that hit Albuquerque earlier today.

To prevent a second outbreak of COVID-19, the City is implementing strict system wide implementation of social distancing, mask wearing, robust screening, and regular handwashing. Additionally, several non-congregate sites have been established to help with isolation for those individuals that either need a fourteen (14) day isolation period or are experiencing COVID symptoms.

To help create the proper social distancing space at the WEHC another Wellness Hotel has been opened to keep older guest and families without homes safe and warm.

“Our team and partners at the Westside Emergency Housing Center have done a great job helping folks get the help and resources they need to continue to combat this virus,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “We’re grateful for their work to create a safe, warm place to go as we approach our first cold snap.”

On October 8, 2020, 17 COVID-19 cases at the WEHC were reported amid a statewide spike. Since the announcement of those cases, the City along with its partners have taken measures to help slow the spread of the virus at the center, allowing it to safely reopen.

The Westside Emergency Housing Center located at 7440 Jim McDowell NW, offers is open to men, women and families experiencing homelessness in Albuquerque. Three meals per day are provided, with both breakfast and lunch being hot meals.
