The event advertised here was a contemporary celebration of Indigenous resistance that honored its legacy in the Southwest. The painting on the poster depicts the aftermath of violence inflicted on the Acoma people by Don Juan de Oñate and his men in 1599. Between eight hundred and one thousand Acoma men, women, and children were killed by the Spanish during the three-day massacre. The celebration in 2006 was a testament to the continued resistance of Indigenous people, from the 1680 to today.
