Vortex Coming to District 7
A New Home
The Vortex will be moving from its current location at 2004½ Central SE to its new home in District 7 at 2900 Carlisle NE.
The new larger space will give the theater:
- more rehearsal and performance space
- larger, more comfortable public restrooms
- quieter heating and air conditioning
- dressing rooms with adequate heating and cooling
- a larger lobby and dry storage
The building will require extensive improvements, including a new heating and cooling system, electrical development for the theatrical lighting, a looping system for the hard-of-hearing, and ADA accessibility. Remodeling will begin in late spring with a planned relocation date of late summer.
"The Next Step in Our History"
The entire project is budgeted at $875,000, of which $725,000 has been raised. A capital campaign will continue through the coming months to raise the final $150,000 needed. President Marty Epstein said, "We are very excited to begin the next step in our history. As New Mexico's oldest black-box theatre, we want our new space, and the productions in it, to honor the past, while providing growth and permanency for the future."
