Councilor's Corner July 2015 Edition

A few words from Vice President Brad Winter.

Happy 4th of July!

It is almost time to celebrate our Nation’s Independence and we wish you and your family a very happy and safe 4th of July! The City will be hosting its annual Freedom Fourth Event at Balloon Fiesta Park on July 4th from 4 p.m.-10 p.m. We will have live performances by country superstars, Thompson Square. For more information regarding parking, food vendors check out the City of Albuquerque Cultural Service website. Please remember to stay hydrated and to use your sunscreen!

Meet the New District 4 Policy Analyst: Rebekka Burt

As some of you may know, I am officially retired from Albuquerque Public Schools! As much as I enjoyed my time and experience over the course of 20+ years, I am equally excited to spend July’s Council recess resting and fishing prior to Council resuming in August. July will be a time of transition for me in more ways than one. My long-time Policy Analyst, Jessica, finished her time with the City on June 26th, 2015. She has worked diligently to serve district 4’s constituents on my behalf and will be greatly missed. As a replacement, I have hired Mrs. Rebekka Burt. Rebekka comes to the City as an experienced 8th grade English Teacher. Her energy, friendly demeanor and ability to get the job done will serve district 4 well. Please help me in welcoming her to our team!

Summerfest a Success!

The Heights Summerfest was an astonishing success at the North Domingo Baca Park! The Cultural Affairs Department estimates that around 10,000 folks showed up to partake in the family and pet-friendly event that showcased live music, a variety of food trucks and microbrewers in the beer garden! This event is a welcomed addition and a great way to have commenced this very hot summer!

Upcoming Improvements to North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center: Phase III

Many of you have inquired about the North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center regarding the non-functioning fountain in the foyer and the status of Phase III. I am happy to report that the Departments of Senior Affairs and Cultural Services worked together to find a functional and beautiful piece of art to fill this space. We are in the process of commissioning 3 various sized basalt column fountains that will complement the architecture and color schemes of our multigenerational center! The various sized columns will serve as a nondescript representation of the many generations that visit and utilize this facility from children to octogenarians.

Phase III of the center will likely include:
  • new gymnasium with an upper level running track
  • rock climbing wall
  • playground
  • office-space

We currently have funding for design which was provided by State legislators. At this time there is no proposed funding in 2015 for phase III. There is approximately $2.5 million requested in 2017 for Phase III, however, we expect the total cost will total $5Million. I will do my best to get phase III funded sooner rather than later.

2015 National Night Out

Mark your calendars for this year’s National Night Out, the City’s annual crime and drug prevention event which will take place on Tuesday, August 4th from 7p.m. - 9p.m! If you are interested in having me attend your neighborhood’s event please contact Rebekka as soon as possible so that I can accommodate your scheduling request.

Picnic with the Mayor

Also taking place this summer will be my annual, Picnic with the Mayor! Join me, Mayor Berry and district 4’s State Legislators on Wednesday, August 5th, 2015 from 6-8 p.m. for a summer cookout at North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center! Invitations will be forthcoming!

Balloon Fiesta Park

The City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department has a jewel in District 4 – Balloon Fiesta Park. BFP is the largest urban park in the state and as everyone from Albuquerque knows, is the host to the largest international balloon fiesta. But what happens the rest of the year?

You can enjoy the majestic views of the Sandia’s and the Jemez mountains as you practice your golf skills on one of the thirty-five lit tees boxes for day or night driving practice. The Golf Center offers children’s programs that include golf camps and ½ price pitch and putt. You can visit the retail shop for your golfing needs, including golf club re-gripping, equipment rental and golf accessories.

Consider hosting your next special event at the Event Center at Balloon Fiesta Park. From bridal party gatherings on the upper deck with panoramic views of the mountains, to sit down dinners, the Event Center features a variety of festive spaces including:
  • versatile indoor banquet room
  • indoor cantina with open access to the patio
  • upper deck patio
  • wrap-around patio with fire pit
  • romantically lit courtyard and gazebo with a trumpet vine covered pergola

The balloon launch field at Balloon Fiesta Park offers green space perfect for recreational and sporting events. All facility rentals are available 10 months out of the years, except in September and October for the Balloon Fiesta. Reservations are on a first-come, first served basis. You can contact this great City operated Golf and Event Center and Launch Field at 768-6043 and 768-6061. Until next time!
