Description

Albuquerque’s 3rd Annual Open Streets Event returns Saturday, October 15th!

Get ready to Get Modal – “Multi”-modal…as the 3rd Annual ABQ CiQlovía is set to take place on Saturday, October 15th. The event – which is sponsored by the Mid-Region Council of Governments (MRCOG) and the New Mexico Complete Streets Leadership Team (NMCSLT), among others – will take place on Central Avenue downtown between 2nd and 8th Streets from 9am until 2pm.

ABQ CiQlovía is an "open streets" event where the road is temporarily closed to vehicle traffic and opened up to people on foot and bike, allowing participants to experience our largest public spaces—streets—in an entirely new way. The free event encourages people of all ages to try out and enjoy active forms of transportation in a fun, safe, and social environment

The event coincides with the Downtown Growers Market and will feature brunch served on the Roving Table, the Duke City Pedaler, Complete Streets demonstration projects, yoga, live music, root beer and popsicles, bike repair, a bike rodeo and climbing wall, arts and culture. Wearing a costume is encouraged, and there will be a best costume award given by Trax, the Rail Runner mascot. CiQlovía is an opportunity to stimulate a community conversation about bicycle, pedestrian, and public health issues, the local economy, and encouraging active lifestyles.

“CiQlovía is an incredible opportunity for kids and adults to walk, bike, or participate in family friendly activities in the street in a safe and social environment,” said Valerie Hermanson, of the Mid-Region Council of Governments and CiQlovía coordinator. “Many cities across the country and around the world offer events like this for residents and visitors to promote active transportation, healthy communities, and support local neighborhoods and businesses.”

“One of the best parts about CiQlovía is you don’t have to be a seasoned bicyclist to participate – all levels of riders are encouraged to come and join the fun – from beginner to bike-savvy…and everything in between. It’s an opportunity for all ages and abilities to experience and reimagine Central Avenue,” said Terra Reed, of Bike ABQ and CiQlovía Volunteer Coordinator.

Coming from north of downtown Albuquerque? Catch the NM Rail Runner Express in the late morning and arrive in time to enjoy the CiQlovía, which is just a hop, skip, and a jump from the Rail Runner’s Downtown ABQ station. Those coming from points south can also ride the train and arrive in time for the start of the event. See the Saturday schedule here. The event is also accessible by bus, especially the Rapid Ride routes. See ABQ Ride route and schedule information here.
