TRAILS OF HOPE AND TERROR (USA/MEXICO 2016)

THE THESIS OF THE DOCUMENTARY ATTEMPTS TO ANSWER THE QUESTION, WHY WE, IN THE UNITED STATES, CURRENTLY HAVE AN IMMIGRATION DILEMMA ON OUR SOUTHERN BORDERS. THE QUESTION IS EXPLORED IN AN ACADEMIC AND SCHOLARLY MATTER THAT IS NONETHELESS ACCESSIBLE TO THE VIEWER. TRAILS OF HOPE AND TERROR: THE MOVIE IS A FIFTY-FIVE MINUTE DOCUMENTARY FOCUSED ON THE TOPIC OF IMMIGRATION. FILMMAKERS TRAVELED TO THE U.S. BORDER FIVE TIMES TO WALK THE DESERT AND INTERVIEW HUMANITARIAN GROUPS, SOCIAL WORKERS, LEGAL PROFESSIONALS, THE UNDOCUMENTED, AND ANTI-IMMIGRATION PROTESTERS. THE FILM EXPLORES THE HISTORICAL AND ECONOMIC REASONS FOR THE CURRENT IMMIGRATION CRISIS, AND HOW POLITICIANS HAVE USED THIS ISSUE TO GARNER VOTES. THE FILM ALSO SHOWS HOW SOME COMMUNITIES OF FAITH ARE RESPONDING TO THE CRISIS.  THE DOCUMENTARY’S STRUCTURE ATTEMPTS TO ANSWER THE QUESTION WHY MEXICAN AND CENTRAL AMERICANS COME TO THE U.S. WITHOUT PROPER DOCUMENTATION. THIS QUESTION IS VOICED EARLY IN THE FILM BY POLITICIANS WHO PRESENT THE UNDOCUMENTED AS A THREAT IN ORDER TO GARNER VOTES SO AS TO WIN ELECTIONS. RATHER THAN SIMPLISTICALLY SCAPEGOATING THE IMMIGRANT, THE DOCUMENTARY EXPLORES THE HISTORICAL EVENTS THAT CONTRIBUTED TO THE MOVEMENTS OF MEXICANS AND CENTRAL AMERICANS NORTHWARD. SPECIAL ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO MANIFEST DESTINY, THE MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR, GUNBOAT DIPLOMACY, THE TREATY OF GUADALUPE HIDALGO, THE CREATION OF BANANA REPUBLICS, THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NORTH AMERICAN FREE TRADE AGREEMENT (NAFTA), THE JUDICIAL PROCEDURE KNOWN AS OPERATION STREAMLINE, THE BORDER STRATEGY KNOWN AS OPERATION GATEKEEPER, AND THE GRASSROOTS’ RESISTANT STRATEGY EMPLOYED BY ADVOCATES FOR THE UNDOCUMENTED KNOWN AS THE SANCTUARY MOVEMENT.
