Mayor Keller, Solid Waste Director Announce Modified Plan for City’s Largest Neighborhood Annual Clean Up Event

Residents are encouraged to maintain social distance by focusing clean up efforts on their own outdoor spaces and sidewalks

April 3, 2020

Today Mayor Keller announced a modified plan for the Great American Clean Up (GAC), an annual event on April 25 from 10am to 12pm. GAC is one of the city’s largest annual cleanups and hosted by Keep Albuquerque Beautiful and the City’s Solid Waste Management Department. This year, instead of gathering in large groups for big clean up events focused on specific areas, the modified plan encourages residents to maintain social distancing as they help clean up their own back yards, front yards, and areas surrounding their own homes and neighborhoods.

“Last year, more than 40 neighborhood associations participated in the Great American Clean Up, and we know how important this event is to our communities,” stated Mayor Tim Keller. “We’re urging folks to maintain social distancing even as they invest time and care in their neighborhoods.”

“The Great American Clean Up is a community effort to beautify our city,” stated Matthew Whelan, Director of the Solid Waste Management Department. “We are grateful to the residents and businesses in our city who are willing to implement social distancing practices to continue to keep Albuquerque clean and beautiful.”

Keep Albuquerque Beautiful and the Solid Waste Management Department will:

  • Provide free trash bags and gloves for your clean up. We will work with Neighborhood Association contacts to safely distribute these items prior to the cleanup.
  • Collect your neighborhood waste from the addresses/streets provided through your Neighborhood Association contact.

Neighborhood Participation:

  • If you haven’t registered your neighborhood, you can do so until April 17 here.
  • SWMD will contact all current registered neighborhood points of contact to provide them with revised information and guide them in the new modified plan.
  • The new hours for the cleanup will be 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The Great American Cleanup is a program of Keep America Beautiful. It is the nation’s largest annual community improvement program that takes place from March 1 through May 31 engaging more than 5 million volunteers and participants every year to create positive change and lasting impact in local communities.
