Start the New Year by Adopting a New Furry Family Member

“Bark in the Meow Year” helps shelter pets find their forever homes
January 07, 2025

ALBUQUERQUE — Why not start 2025 with more love and companionship in your life? The Animal Welfare Department (AWD) is celebrating “Bark in the Meow Year” on Friday, January 10 through Sunday, January 12 at the city shelters.  The adoption fee is waived for all pets.

“New Year’s is an opportunity to create positive life changes with fresh starts and resolutions to make our lives and the world around us better,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “It gives us all a chance for a new beginning and that’s just what these shelter pets need.”

All adoptions include spay or neuter, a pet tag, microchip, vaccinations and one free initial vet visit. AWD is also offering one session of free basic dog training with every adoption. Our adoption counselors can share insights about the pet you’re interested in to help you find the perfect match.

Krispy Kreme’s is supporting AWD’s shelter pets by offering one free dozen donuts to new adoptive pet parents.

“This is the time of year when many of us resolve to spread kindness, be more active, make new friends and make changes that will improve our lives,” said Carolyn Ortega, Director of Animal Welfare Department. “Pets can help you achieve some of your goals. Make shelter pets’ a priority this month. You’ll never regret it!”

AWD encourages everyone to join them in this New Year by supporting shelter pets through adoption, fostering, volunteering, donations and advocacy.
