Open Space Education & Public Programs for All Ages

Open Space division offers various Camps and Hikes for adults, families, and children age 3 and up.

Discover and explore wonderful and wild open spaces through hands-on hands-on science, literacy, physical, and art activities! Open Space youth programs promote creativity, problem solving, enhanced cognitive abilities, improved focus, stress relief, social interactions and exposure to real-life opportunities. All in the heart of Albuquerque at the Open Space Visitor Center and surrounding major public Open Space lands.

Preparation

Participants should attend outdoor programs prepared to explore the outdoors depending on the season and conditions: appropriate clothing, sunscreen and insect repellent applied, closed-toed walking shoes, and a backpack with snack and water bottle. The program educator will supply all other materials. Please meet at the Open Space Visitor Center Patio at 6500 Coors Blvd NW, 87120.

Program Descriptions

This pre-school aged youth program takes place inside the Open Space Visitor Center where participants will make new discoveries about the world around them. The program includes hands-on science, literacy, and art projects. Participants will also receive a packet at the end of the session with various activities and images so that the days discoveries can continue at home. Different themes take place each session and may include a short excursion outside.

This elementary-aged program takes place outdoors exploring nature at the Open Space Visitor Center with hiking in the cottonwood forest, along the river, and in the native plant gardens. Program includes hands-on science, literacy, and art activities. Different themes take place each session.

Open Space Saturday Explorer Camp

This elementary-aged youth program takes place outdoors exploring nature at the Open Space Visitor Center hiking in the cottonwood forest, along the river, and in the native plant gardens. Program includes hands-on science, literacy, and art activities. Different themes take place each session.

This teen program takes place outdoors and allows youth to decompress in nature after a long day of learning indoors at school. Program includes time for supervised free-form nature exploration and hands-on educational games and activities that get them moving.

Teens will join an Open Space Educator in hands-on science experiments that challenge them to use critical thinking skills while working in a supportive team setting. Teens will be encouraged after the experiment to analyze the results and make connections to larger scale environmental concepts. Different themes take place each session.

Join an Open Space Educator on a family-friendly hike through the bosque and down to the river. Engage in hands-on learning together as a family, listen to natural history fun facts, enjoy storytelling, and seek out wildlife. Trail will accommodate larger-wheeled strollers.

This adult program begins at the Open Space Visitor Center where participants will learn the basic principles of birding, including both binocular and field guide use, identifying common species, and ethics of birding. The program will continue with a guided walk through the cottonwood forest down to the Rio Grande where participants will be able to practice those skills. Binoculars will be provided as well as pocket field guides, however, participants are welcome to bring their own gear if they wish.
