Join us for a day of of art, music, and poetry on the lovely grounds of the Open Space Visitor Center, overlooking 18 acres of farmland, the Rio Grande’s bosque and the Sandia Mountains.

This year’s featured poets are: Megan Baldrige, Dale Harris, Don McIver, Donald Levering, Albuquerque Poet Laureate Michelle Otero, and Scott Wiggerman. See for updates on the reading schedule.

Albuquerque’s calligraphy society Escribiente, the New Mexico Book Arts Guild Libros, the New Mexico State Poetry Society (NMSPS), the Open Space Alliance, and dozens of local poets have come together for this unique art exhibit and day of spoken word poetry.

Free admission, open to all.


• ONGOING: Weathergram calligraphy exhibit throughout the grounds of the Visitor Center.
• 10am: Haiku workshop and Ginko walk. RSVP for the workshop at 897-8831.
• 11:30am -3:00pm: Escribiente calligraphy demonstrations and Weathergram demos. Escribiente members will be on hand to demonstrate calligraphy and show how Weathergrams are made.
• 12:00-3:30pm: New Mexico Small Press book sales and information tables
• 12:00 -12:45pm: Picnic on the patio with a musical performance by jazz band Last Call. Bring a picnic and your picnic blanket and enjoy the view! Light refreshments will be available by donation.
• 2pm-4pm: Art of Haiku Exhibit Opening Reception. A contemporary interpretation of Haiga, a traditional Japanese art form combining art and poetry.
• 1:00-2:30pm: Poetry reading and open mic
• 2:30-4:00pm: Poetry reading and open mic

New Mexico Small Press displays: New Mexico-based small presses specializing in poetry publications will be on site with books available for purchase and include: Beatlick Press, Bosque Press, Dos Gatos Press, Jules’ Poetry Playhouse, Swimming with Elephants, and Village Books Press.

“Weathergram” Outdoor Calligraphy and Poetry Exhibit: Escribiente calligraphers inscribed haiku selections from New Mexico poets onto brown paper tags called Weathergrams. These are displayed on trees and bushes in the Open Space Visitor Center courtyards. Chapbooks of these Weathergram poems, created by LIBROS bookmakers, will be on sale to benefit the Open Space Alliance, a volunteer organization which supports and promotes Open Space Activities.

Art of Haiku Exhibit: A visual art exhibit “The Art of Haiku” is on view in the Open Space Visitor Center lobby gallery area May 3 through June 9 with a reception during the Poets’ Picnic. Featuring unique scrolls created by New Mexico calligraphic artists using haiku from local poets, this show offers a contemporary interpretation of Haiga, a traditional Japanese art form combining art and poetry.
