Upgrades to Safety, Security, Sanitation Underway at Westside Emergency Housing Center

Renovations to provide safe environment as shelter remains critical piece of pandemic response.

January 25, 2021

The City of Albuquerque announced today that more than $1 million in facility upgrades are currently underway at the Westside Emergency Housing Center (WEHC). The improvements will help modernize the State's largest homeless shelter, making it more secure for individuals seeking a safe and welcoming environment.

The investment prepares the WEHC for the next phase of the Gateway plan to give homeless residents more access to housing and resources to get off the streets, addressing needs for better ventilation due to COVID-19, accessibility, and sanitation.

"When providing shelter for people, a safe environment always tops the list of priorities," said Family and Community Services Director Carol Pierce. "These improvements will foster a healthier and more hospitable situation for our guests as they utilize the WEHC."

Upgrades include:

  • 29 HVAC units and exhaust fans,
  • Milling and grading of the parking lot,
  • Construction of trash enclosure, and
  • ADA ramps and stair repairs.

The estimated timeline for completion is early summer 2021.

The Westside Emergency Housing Center, located at 7440 Jim McDowell NW, is open to men and women experiencing homelessness in Albuquerque. Three meals per day and transportation is provided.

In 2020, the WEHC provided services and protection to 4,764 individuals on average each month. Service need and usage are forecasted to increase in 2021 due to the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis.
