Speaker Ted Gong will discuss the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the six decades of anti-Chinese laws that have effected all Americans. Driven by nativism, this legacy of exclusion and its negative impacts undermined core American values. This talk examines concepts from the Chinese Exclusion Act and the social conditions and attitudes around it that remain relevant and important to consider today.

Gong is retired from the U.S. Foreign Service where he worked on border security, immigration, refugees, citizenship and consular services. He is the director of the 1882 Project Foundation, an organization that broadens public awareness and understanding of the history of the Chinese in America.

Admission to the talk is free with your paid general admission.
