Street photography, as a style, was especially popular in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s. In 1969, the Albuquerque Museum hired former Albuquerque Tribune photographer Walter McDonald to capture spontaneous moments in Albuquerque through the format of 35 mm color slides. Over the course of eight months, he walked the sidewalks and drove the streets to document a vibrant downtown, a popular transit system, a changing urban landscape, and the colorful fashion trends of the time.

During Photo Archives business hours (Tuesday–Friday, 9 a.m.–12 p.m. and 1–5 p.m.) grab your free postcard of an image from the show. See more images by McDonald in the browsing collection inside the Photo Archives.

Then mark your calendar to visit the companion history exhibition in the Keleher Gallery opening December 21.

General admission to Albuquerque Museum $3–$6
