Learn to bake in a traditional horno

The construction of hornos is very much the same today as it was hundreds of years ago. Individual Pueblo villages, as well as individual families, have their own unique style of constructing hornos. The enduring tradition of baking bread is still passed on from one generation to another. Cooking methods may have changed, but the feeding of one’s family has not. Learn about methods in prepping, cooking, and baking in a horno taught by a Martina Rosetta of Santo Domingo Pueblo.

Premiers on Saturday, September 26 at 1:45 p.m.

On the forge with blacksmith Dave Sabo

Herreros, or Spanish blacksmiths, were highly valued members of Spanish expeditions to New Mexico. Their most common function was to shoe horses and repair armor, firearms, and small tools. As more colonists arrived, blacksmiths turned their attention to providing domestic goods such like griddles, ladles, and knives. Local blacksmith, Dave Sabo, is skilled in the traditional methods of herreros. Watch Dave work the forge as he describes early iron manufacturing and blacksmithing practices used in colonial New Mexico.

Premiers on Saturday, September 26 at 1:15 p.m.

Actress, singer, and traditional storyteller, Rosalia Pacheco, offers four new tales meant for all ages to enjoy. Rosalia retells the traditional cuentos of “The Magical Pears,” “The Lion and the Bee,” “Tia with the Tortilla,” and “La Llorona.”

In the early 1950s, Shirley Jolly Minge and Ward Alan Minge took a late 19th century adobe building and in Corrales and turned it into a plazuela-style rancho to house their collection of vernacular art from New Mexico’s Spanish Colonial and Territorial periods into the twentieth-century. The collection is now explored and highlighted through docent led tours at Casa San Ysidro: The Gutiérrez/Minge House. Collections through the Eyes of Docents offers a behind the scenes look at the histories and anecdotes collected from docent knowledge about the Minge Collection.
