Sign up for an 8-session workshop in memoir writing inspired by the exhibition A Past Rediscovered: Highlights from the Palace of the Governors.

This workshop will utilize photos, objects, ephemera, documents and other works from the Palace of the Governors as inspiration for writing. Participants will learn how to put their stories and memories to paper using visual and other stimuli as well revise their writing with feedback from instructor and peers. The workshop will be taught with mapping, writing prompts and exercises, readings, visits to the exhibit, large group discussion, small group and pair work, constructive feedback workshops, and discussion.

Participants will:

  • generate writing about their own lives and learn how to write more effectively.
  • receive inspiration from looking and writing about exhibit works and works of art.
  • share their writing with instructor and peers and learn the value of considering audience.
  • give and receive constructive feedback as an effective process for writing well.
  • become better writers and feel a sense of accomplishment in writing memoir.

The culminating event will be memoir reading in which each participant shares part of his/her memoir-in-progress. Each writer will decide what s/he wants to read for the event as well as the order of readers. Participants will decide whether they'd like to show images from the exhibit before, during and/or after the reading, especially those that were particularly important in inspiring writing.
