Casa San Ysidro: the Gutiérrez-Minge House seeks volunteers to assist with special events, programs, and to guide public and school tours of this historic property located in Corrales.

Training will take place on March 7, 14, and 21 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Volunteers must attend all three sessions and pass a City of Albuquerque background check to give these tours. Docents work shifts about one to three hours long leading school groups and public tours. Shifts may vary depending on events and schedule of tours each week.

“Casa is a place for people to come together to explore the New Mexican experience, spark creativity, and nurture their community,” says Aaron Gardner, site manager of Casa San Ysidro. “The Casa San Ysidro docents enhance our visitors experience through their dedication to knowledge.”

The docent program involves formal classroom style training about New Mexico history and the artifacts that reside at the 19th century adobe home. “Docents are trained in inclusive, interactive, and participatory methods to ensure accommodating everyone. Without our docent team, Casa could not function,” says Gardner.

Nan Kimball decided to become a docent in 2013, after she had recently retired. Kimball taught at Corrales Elementary where she would frequently take her students on tours of Casa San Ysidro to learn about New Mexico history. “I am able to spend time doing what I love and spend time with other docents and staff that love their jobs as well,” says Kimball. “It is an incredible atmosphere.”

Casa San Ysidro is a program of Albuquerque Museum and the Cultural Services Department of the City of Albuquerque. Casa San Ysidro's docent program is dedicated to bringing qualified individuals to support the site and its programs. Its goal is to bring educational opportunities to visitors and members of the community.
