Docents in the Old Town Walking Tour provide guided walking experiences in the historic district that adjoins the Museum. Tours are provided to visitors from varied backgrounds, age levels and abilities. We are looking for people who are passionate about history and enjoy interacting with people.

Guided Public Tours

Walking tours of the historic district adjoining the museum emphasize the history of Albuquerque and the Old Town neighborhood as well as the architectural features of several buildings around the plaza. Guided one hour tours are offered Tuesday-Sunday at 11:00 am from March-November, weather permitting. Occasional school tours and special tours are also scheduled.

Requirements

  • Satisfactory completion of initial training.
  • Docents must have the ability to stand, walk or move throughout the museum and neighborhood for at least an hour.

Tours take place primarily outdoors and are subject to varied weather conditions.

Albuquerque Museum requires all volunteers to pass a City of Albuquerque background check. Background Check Applications will be provided to all interested applicants before starting training.

Time Commitment

  • Docents are expected to give a minimum of one tour a month.
  • They should attend enrichment opportunities as needed.
  • Docents are asked to return one year of service for each year of training.

Reports To

The docent program is managed and operated by the Museum’s Education Division, which includes the Curator of Education, Associate Curator of Education and Senior Assistant for Education. Volunteer Coordinators are docent leaders who work with museum staff in support of the docent program.
