Sojourn Opens During Night of the Arts at South Broadway Cultural Center

Three artists come together for new exhibition

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - A Night of the Arts, a celebration of art and music, at South Broadway Cultural Center will feature a new exhibition by three artists and short movie and performance by Aaron Hamre. The exhibition, Sojourn, opens with a reception Thursday, Aug. 30 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Sojourn features the work of Kim Arthun, John Descarfino, and Jose Arenas. Journeying and intimations of a place provide the inspiration for the exhibit. Sojourn will be on view through October 12.

Pieces by Descarfino portray passages and nod to romantic landscape painting with its atmospheric conditions and references to natural forces. "Idyllic and sublime subjects are eschewed for the more ubiquitous and unanticipated aspects of travel," Descarfino explains. "Like a travel log, the landscape and the psychological intertwine.

"Descarfino's working process has some resemblance to the palimpsest since his images undergo multiple revisions, layering and reconfiguration until all elements come together to impart a sense of place and emotive content to the painting.

Arenas, based in California, gathers imagery from multiple sources which speak about his Entre Nos, by Jose Arenas, oil on woodexperience of dislocation, displacement, and a sense of disorientation from growing up in two countries - Mexico and the United States. Having a dual identity from parallel worlds with distinct customs and rituals becomes a point of investigation in his work. He explores this personal experience by creating collage-like vignettes that merge many visual styles and representational methods. The result is a pastiche of elements that create distinct narratives but also remain open to interpretation.

Albuquerque-native Arthun has exhibited his work nationally and internationally for more than 40 years. His artwork has developed into a personal geometric abstract style based on the land forms of New Mexico and pure abstraction. "I was fascinated growing up in New Mexico with the Native American use of hard edged abstract geometry in all their art forms," he explains. "To me southwest art is abstract geometry, not howling coyotes or sunsets.

"Arthun graduated from the University of New Mexico with Bachelor's of Fine Arts in lithography and drawing in 1976. in 1999, he co-founded EXHIBIT/208, exhibition venue and community to showcase artists that call Albuquerque home.

Exhibition runs from August 30th - October 12th

An eight minute musical space adventure movie, Duke Rooster: Quest for the Chupacabra, starring Aaron Hamre will screen in the John Lewis Theatre at 6 p.m. followed by Hamre's mixture of music and comedy.

Admission to Night of the Arts is free.
