Description

Critically acclaimed, Albuquerque-based Latin American ensemble Baracutanga present a very special all-acoustic performance that tells a tale that builds imaginary bridges of integration between Africa (the First world), Europe (the Old world) and South America (the New world).  The show, entitled Across The Divide: A Tale of Three Worldstakes place on November 4th at 7:30 pm at the South Broadway Cultural Center in Albuquerque, NM.

The performance will be broken into two sets, featuring 12 musicians on stage joined by 5 dancers and utilizing video and photo projections that take the audience on an exceptional emotional and artistic journey through music, dance and visual art.  During the performance three worlds collide as flamenco meets samba, Africa agai encounters South America, and explosive rhythms and styles such as Afro-Peruvian, Andean huayño, cumbia Colombiana and Uruguayan candombe show up in surprising ways.

Baragutanga is an Africaan voicing that means “people dancing”. The band – representing four different countries (Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, USA) – prides itself on arranging traditional South American rhythms, such as huayño and cumbia in new and interesting ways. Middle-Eastern darbuka or the Afro-Cuban bata and Afro-Peruvian festejo mix with Andean zampoñas, among countless other rhythmic combinations. This kind of experimentation, coupled with a blending ancestral traditions with a modern sensibility, has resulted in an exciting and distinct Latin flavor all its own that leaves dancing crowds always wanting more.

Across The Divide: A Tale of Three Worlds, by Baracutanga promises to be a thoughtful yet festive evening that will cross linguistic and cultural barriers, promote  intercultural experiences, and create a new dialogue of peace and self-affirmation.
