Albuquerque, New Mexico - The New Mexico BioPark Society and presenting sponsor Waterstone Mortgage are excited to announce the 36th annual Run for the Zoo … and walk with us too! on Sunday, May 7, 2023.

A community staple and family favorite event, Run for the Zoo registration is now open for all ages and fitness levels. All registered participants receive an official Run for the Zoo commemorative t-shirt, post-race refreshments, coupons, and free admission into the ABQ BioPark Zoo with their race bib on Race Day.

Run for the Zoo is one of the largest races in New Mexico, with a cap of 10,000 participants and five different distances to choose from: Half Marathon (13+), 10K Timed, 5K Timed, 5K Fitness, and a 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk course that journeys through the back of the Zoo.

“Run for the Zoo has been a favorite among New Mexicans for the past 35 years,” said Kent Berry, New Mexico BioPark Society events director. “It’s a great event for individuals, friends and family, corporate teams, local businesses, schools, and running groups, and all the proceeds support the BioPark, another New Mexican favorite!”

With the highly anticipated Asia expansion opening at the later this year, this year’s Run for the Zoo artwork is spotlighting the extraordinary Malayan tiger. The events team is encouraging all 2023 participants to “Stripe up and support your BioPark,” by wearing striped athletic wear or adding stripes to their faces.

The Malayan tiger has a population of less than 500 left in the wild. With the ABQ BioPark being one of only a very few facilities in North America to house this majestic animal, the newly renovated state-of-the-art habitat, along with the entire Asia expansion, will continue the mission of the New Mexico BioPark of making the exceptional possible.

Registration is open, and regular registration fees range from $25 to $70 (youth and adult prices). Prices increase in mid-April and again over race weekend. Participants can register for their favorite race at All proceeds support the BioPark.
