Job Opening: Aquarium and Botanic Garden Education Facilitator Lead Teaching Assistant

Nov. 16, 2022 - ABQ BioPark Aquarium and Botanic Garden education programs include on-site programs, conservation education events, summer day camps, evening programs, tours, general exhibit interpretation, and arthropod and touch pool encounters. Programs are held at the Aquarium, Botanic Garden and Tingley Beach. The program facilitator is responsible for implementation during those programs. 

The Aquarium and Botanic Garden education facilitator position is staffed through a temporary staffing agency and reports to the north side education coordinator. The Aquarium and Botanic Garden education coordinator is responsible for planning and coordinating education activities for the Aquarium, Botanic Garden, Heritage Farm, BUGarium and Tingley Beach. This includes animal handling and training, and working with volunteer interpreters.

Education Requirements and Qualifications

The recommended education and experience requirements include two years of experience in teaching formal or informal education, preferably in the sciences. Formal education may be interchangeable by a degree with major coursework in science, education, or a related field, plus one year of experience in informal educational programming. Experience working in zoo and/or aquarium education is a plus. Individuals selected for the position must pass a background check.


  • Presenting informal education programming across the north side to include general tours, talks, feeding narrations, discovery days, etc.
  • Working with volunteer coordinator to oversee arthropod and touchpool educator volunteers, and working alongside or in their place when needed
  • Assisting with volunteer training programs including Aquarium and Botanic Garden docents, arthropod handling and touchpool
  • Assisting with Camp BioPark programs
  • Assisting with educational community partner shows in the Botanic Garden
  • Working as part of the education team on BioPark wide programming, events and planning
  • Working as part of a team including education volunteers
  • Computer skills including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • Performing general BioPark administrative tasks
  • Other duties as assigned by Aquarium and Botanic Garden education coordinator and education curator

Work schedule

Work schedule is 20 to 40 hours a week. Full- and Part-time positions available.  Weekend and evening hours will be required. Evening programs or programs outside of work schedule will be assigned in advance. Hours in one week may not exceed 40 hours (or part-time status agreed upon at hiring).  It is the responsibility of the Aquarium and Botanic Garden education facilitator to flex and track those hours in conjunction with the north side education coordinator.

Pay rate

$15.96/hour. This position is hired through a temporary staffing agency, not the City of Albuquerque.
