Virtual Science Cafe: Caring for Shorebirds in Africa
When
Where
Description
In January, ABQ BioPark Zookeeper Ashley Bauer spent a month working with rescued shorebirds (mostly penguins) as a volunteer at Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) in Africa. The Cape Town-based rescue and rehabilitation facility cares for shore birds with a strong emphasis on critically endangered African penguins. About 85 percent of rescues are released back into the wild.
During this special Science Cafe, Bauer will talk about her work at SANCCOB helping to care for more than 300 shorebirds: tube feeding, wound care, medication administration and general husbandry. Bauer also helped release 20 African penguins during her time at SANCCOB.
