Call for Visual Artists: All Black and White

During balloon fiesta, hundreds of balloons and thousands more spectators flood the grass fields.  In the sea of color and texture, launch directors clear the way for each hot air balloon to launch safely into the sky.  These Launch directors use the basics of contrasts and design in their unique fashion to stand out from the crowd. Dressed in all black and white, the launch directors are fondly called “Zebras.”

Black and white is the most basic form of drawing and design.  Positive and negative spaces form lines, patterns, textures, and designs. The stark contrast catches the eye and can project movement, intrigue, and even stories. Black and white continues from ancient times thru today as a form of expression through design.

Like a great music score, notes drawn on a paper – the Anderson Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum, City of Albuquerque Department of Arts and Culture, (not Public Art as previously written), and the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center are composing an exhibition inspired by the black and white patterns of the Balloon Fiesta “Zebras.” Artwork by 6 local and or indigenous artists will have their works on display in celebration of black and white design. The selected artworks will be on display along with photos of Launch Directors or “Zebras” (taken by visitors to the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in 2019) at the Anderson Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum. Summer 2021 through Summer 2022.

All artists residing in New Mexico are invited to submit black and white design original artwork to be featured in an online display and later an in-person exhibition at the Anderson Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum.
