Albuquerque Museum Names New Curator of History

Albuquerque Museum Names New Curator of History. Leslie Kim to lead new era in collections and community engagement

ALBUQUERQUE, NM — July 9, 2020 — Albuquerque Museum has named Leslie Kim as the curator of history. Kim fills the position left vacant since January 2019 when then Curator of History Deborah Slaney retired after 20 years.

Kim grew up in Albuquerque and her experience of the diverse community here sparked her interest in the history of our community and state. As a child, visits to Albuquerque Museum set her on a career path of investigating and teaching about the past in meaningful ways. Kim’s background as an historian and teacher, curatorial and collections researcher, lecturer, and collector outreach associate, render her uniquely qualified to step into the role of curator of history at the Albuquerque Museum.

Kim received her Bachelor of Arts from Colorado College. She received her Master of Arts in History from the University of Arizona, Tucson with a concentration in Colonial Mexico (the time period leading up to and including the colonization of Albuquerque). Prior to joining Albuquerque Museum, she was on the faculty of Albuquerque Academy, and was a member on the history curriculum review committee.

“I look forward to collaborating with museum staff as well as our diverse Albuquerque cultural leaders to plan, develop, and deliver a public-focused history program that will encourage all members of our community to interact with history and the objects that define it (and us),” says Kim. “We will delve into connections between our geography and history, explore our own local histories and cultural traditions, and connect them to wider national and international trends.”

“A native of our city, Leslie Kim is deeply passionate about the history of Albuquerque,” says Museum Director Andrew Connors. “She will build on the programming the Museum already offers, and will add new perspective to the role after two decades as a teacher of history. Now more than ever, our country in engaged in the reexamination of history, and Leslie knows how to inspire thoughtful understanding of and conversation about the stories we need to tell. She will steward and expand our permanent collection of more than 35,000 historical artifacts with a fresh perspective."

Kim began on June 23, 2020. Please join us in welcoming her to the Albuquerque Museum.
