Description

Join Assistant Curator of Art William Gassaway and featured artist Soo Sunny Park for an illuminating opening talk on opening day of the exhibition Light, Space, and the Shape of Time, which delves into the pioneers of the Light and Space movement, their art, and the two generations of artists who have followed. Explore how the visionary artists in this exhibition expand our perceptions of the world around us through their use of light, atmosphere, and optical effects.

The Light and Space movement took shape in Southern California in the early 1960s. Pushing back against other movements of their time, these artists worked with everyday materials to create experiences that embodied a different understanding of our physical environment. Featured artists: Peter Alexander, Neil Ambrose-Smith (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation of Montana), LaTurbo Avedon, Larry Bell, Barbara Bock, Dan Flavin, Jenny Holzer, Robert Irwin, Florence Miller Pierce, August Muth, Michael Namingha (Hopi), Soo Sunny Park, Helen Pashgian, James Turrell, Leo Villareal, and Kumi Yashamita.

Soo Sunny Park, born in Seoul, South Korea, is an award-winning contemporary artist known for her mesmerizing installations that blend sculpture, light, and space. She received her a BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design and her MFA in Sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her many awards include the Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA grant, the Helen Foster Barnett Prize, the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture residency, the Cité Internationale des Arts studio residency, and the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center Arts and Literary Arts Residency.

William Gassaway is Assistant Curator for Art at Albuquerque Museum, where he contributes to the research and public display of the Museum’s approximately 12,000 works of art. Originally from Albuquerque, Gassaway obtained his BA in art history from the University of New Mexico and his MA and PhD in pre-Hispanic art and archaeology from Columbia University. He previously served as Associate Educator in Academic and Professional Programs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
