Description

Victorian Glasgow was filled with tearooms, thanks in part to the grand maven of tea Catherine Cranston, who owned four prosperous tea parlors by 1903. She turned to local artist and architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh for help with their design; one of them remains operational today. Tea historian Bruce Richardson discusses the history of British tea, Mackintosh’s relationship with Catherine Cranston, and the influence of japonisme on Scottish tea and art at the turn of the twentieth century.
