Albuquerque is an urban island surrounded by wilderness, and our city enjoys a close relationship with our natural surroundings. Many species of wildlife have adapted to live in and around our developed areas.

Although urban wildlife can be enjoyable, sometimes conflicts arise between humans and wildlife. The Urban Biology Division works to find resolution for these conflicts.

The overarching goal is to strive towards coexistence and to promote conservation of wildlife.

Urban Wildlife Management

  • The City of Albuquerque does not typically perform wildlife management on private property.
  • Wild animals are normally only removed or restricted for public safety reasons.
  • Feeding of wildlife is discouraged; feeding impairs animals’ natural abilities to find food for themselves, creating dependency on humans, and in some cases creates safety concerns for humans and pets.
