Rapid Ride Starts
ABQ RIDE and Mayor Martin Chavez are proud to announce the advent of rapid public transportation in Albuquerque this December. Rapid Ride will be a convenient and efficient way to get to work and play. Rapid Ride will feature a modern system of environmentally friendly buses that will provide quick and easy access to major business centers, attractions, dining, shopping, hotels and special events without having to account for parking availability, fees, gas or traffic.
The Route
Rapid Ride will travel an 11-mile route along Central Avenue from Unser to Wyoming, then north on Wyoming to the Uptown shopping district (map in PDF format). The route will provide access from the West Side to the Bio Park, Old Town, Downtown, Presbyterian Hospital, the University of New Mexico, Nob Hill, NM Expo at the State Fairgrounds, the new International Market, Los Altos Golf Course / Skate Park and the Uptown shopping area. Rapid Ride will operate in a corridor that already serves 10,000 riders per weekday. With the addition of Rapid Ride, ABQ RIDE expects that number to grow substantially, adding a greater number of commuters, students and tourists to the existing ridership. ABQ RIDE also expects Rapid Ride will provide crucial capacity across the Rio Grande River during the Coors / Interstate 40 reconstruction.
The Service
Rapid Ride buses will arrive and depart every 10 minutes from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Local service (Route 66) along the corridor will be scaled back in frequency from 10 minutes to 15 minutes during the week. Local weekend service will remain unchanged.
