ABQ RIDE Changing Method of Making ADA Announcements on Buses
To ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), ABQ RIDE is modifying its on-board announcements.
Beginning December 24, 2012, all ABQ RIDE buses will announce the following bus stops:
- Transfer locations to other routes;
- Stops associated with major intersections;
- Stops associated with major destinations, such as UNM or CNM, community centers and others;
- At intervals along any route, called wayfinding announcements, to permit those with visual impairments to be oriented to their location;
These announcements will be made with the on-board automated announcement system. If the automated system is not functioning, ABQ RIDE motor coach operators will verbally announce the information. Specific stops requested by passengers will also be announced.
ABQ RIDE is making the changes after receiving a letter from the Federal Transit Administration last May. It found that the Transit Department’s fixed-route bus stop announcement practice was not in full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.
After soliciting information from advocacy groups in Albuquerque, a public meeting in June on proposed changes to the on-board announcements and receiving public comments via e-mail, ABQ RIDE modified its Americans with Disabilities Act Fixed-Route Announcement Policy.
“This method of making ADA announcements on our buses will bring the department into compliance with the ADA bus stop announcement requirements,” said Bruce Rizzieri, Director of ABQ RIDE.
