Public Relations Professional: Ideally, the designated website liaison should be a trained public relations professional, such as the department Public Information Officer, or work closely with or under the Public Information Officer. This individual should have superior writing and grammatical skills, and the ability to write news releases and proof and edit others’ material.
Basic Computer and Website Surfing Skills: The liaison must be very comfortable with a computer and surfing the web. They might have strong MS Office skills, for example. They must have strong Windows skills and be familiar with installing software. They must surf the web on a regular basis and be familiar with using things like search engines, news sites, online purchases, online forms, downloading music, etc. They should have a basic interest in the web, be inquisitive, and not be afraid to take risks and make mistakes.
Authority: The liaison should carry the authority of the department director. This person should have the authority to edit the material of others, even other managers in their department or various other divisions. This person must be able to make public relations decisions on behalf of their department. This person should be the advocate for the website in ensuring that all public relations content is on the web and up to date.
Commitment: The liaison should commit between 3-5 hours / week to web publishing. This may include: writing, meetings & correspondence, editing, seeking approvals, designing, photography, photo editing, maintaining content, fact checking, etc. They should attend all website meetings and will serve as a point of contact for everyone in their department for website publishing.
Self Study: This person must commit at additional 1 hour/week to self study: read additional material, attend additional classes, surf the web for similar websites, research, download and learn additional software, etc.
Access: This liaison should directly publish to the web using Contribute, have PEST access, and be the Noticias approver (many others can have Noticias author access.)
