March 11: Battlefield Band @ 7:30

photoUnder the banner "Forward With Scotland's Past," Battlefield Band play Scottish music of rare passion and joy. Inspired by their rich heritage of Celtic music and fired by the strength of today's Scottish Cultural scene (which they themselves have done much to create and fuel), Battlefield Band mix the old songs with new self-penned material, and perform them on a unique fusion of ancient and modern instruments—bagpipe, fiddle, synthesiser, guitar, cittern, flute, bodhran and accordion.

Named after the Glasgow suburb of Battlefield, where the group was formed by four student friends, Battlefield Band have been on the world''s roads for just on 30 years now, distilling their own unique form of the Scottish spirit and bottling it in concert and onto disc. They have broken down barriers and pioneered many new directions which others have followed. Angry, joyful, raucous, contemplative, their music is most importantly—accessible to all.

During those years, there have been line-up changes, and indeed the band are remarkable for the smooth and organic way in which these changes have taken place. Their continued creativity, freshness and enthusiasm is due to the positive way they have viewed, and used, these changes—and of course the new musicians themselves have been of prime importance. The newest member is Sean O'Donnell, an accomplished guitar player and singer from Derry, Northern Ireland, who has been playing music since the age of 16. He moved to Scotland in 1996, quickly becoming active in the live music scene. Add him to the Battlefield Band mix of experience and musicianship—founding member Alan Reid on keyboards and vocals, fiddle prodigy Alasdair White, bagpipe virtuoso Mike Katz—and you have a unique blend making a unique band.

"All it took was the sound of Ali White and Highland bagpiper Mike Katz ripping into a set of dance tunes, including reels bursting with color and energy, to entice nearly everyone in the packed house to underscore the music with clapping hands and stamping feet. Even an old-fashioned celtic waltz proved rhythmically contagious once the renowned quartet pushed the tune into overdrive, arguably its favourite gear."

Enter The Haggis
The music of the Canadian quintet “Enter the Haggis” is much like the traditional Scottish dish. The recipe? A little rock, some bluegrass, a pinch of folk, a dash of Latin, and a lot of traditional Celtic—all blended together by five super-talented musicians to create a unclassifiable mix that culminates in an emotional, uplifting, intellectual, stimulating, one-of-a-kind live performance.
