Climbing Adventure White Rock Climb

What: Come learn a fun, cool and risky high adventure sport that you can enjoy your whole life. Learn the Xtreme sport of rock climbing, where you will be climbing 20 to 60 feet up a vertical cliff supported by a rope, a harness and your own skill. Outdoor Recreation will teach guests how to climb safely using the newest equipment and latest techniques.. Each guest needs to wear sturdy shoes (hiking or good fitting tennis shoes) for the short hike, and loose fitting pants. Climbing shoes are highly recommended and available for rent at REI or to buy at Stone Age Climbing Gym. Guests also need to bring water, lunch, snacks and sunscreen. Dress for the weather.

Who: This trip is open to twelve teenaged guests (ages 11 – 17).

Prerequisite: Guests must be able to hike one mile.

Cost: The cost is $10 per guest.

When:

  • July 3  Tijeras Ranger Wall  7:45AM-3:00PM
  • July 10  Tijeras Ranger Wall  7:45AM-3:00PM

Where: Outdoor Recreation office; Ranger Wall, near the Tijeras Ranger Station. Climbing trips meet at the Parks and Recreation Administration Building at 1801 4th Street NW, and then guests are transported in a City vehicle to the climbing area. Please be here 15 minutes prior to the event start time so we can leave on time.

How: Pre-registration is required. Space is filled on a “first come/first served” basis, so call quickly. More information and registration forms are available by several methods.

"Learn To" Climb Adventure Series

Outdoor Recreation will teach guests how to climb safely using the newest equipment and latest techniques. The “Learn To” series will be three full day sessions, beginning on day one with basic climbing techniques, knots for climbers, and belaying on our portable climbing wall. Day two will be short, easy climbs near Tijeras, and then day three will be longer, harder climbs in the beautiful Jemez Mountains. Each guest needs to wear sturdy shoes (hiking or good fitting tennis shoes) for the short hike, and loose fitting pants. Climbing shoes are highly recommended and available for rent at REI or to buy at Stone Age Climbing Gym. Guests also need to bring water, lunch, snacks and sunscreen. Dress for the weather.

  • Ranger Wall, near the Tijeras Ranger Station
  • Las Conchas, in the Jemez Mountains
