Thirty-three graduate from the Academy

Chief Schultz and a cadetAlbuquerque Police Chief Ray Schultz pinned a badge Friday on 33 new officers who graduated from the police academy.

The officers were members of Albuquerque Police Academy’s 104th cadet class. One Albuquerque Fire arson investigator also graduated from the academy. The new rookie police officers will now go through three months of on-the-job training before they patrol the streets. The new officers brought APD’s sworn manpower to 1,115.

“This was a great academy class,” Police Chief Ray Schultz said. “Graduating from the police academy is no small accomplishment.”

During the graduation ceremony, Mayor Richard J. Berry delivered the keynote address and told cadets that their sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Mayor Berry address the class“I promise you that we will work hard to make sure none of us take for granted the sacrifices you are going to make,” Mayor Berry said. “I can feel safe, we all can feel safe, because of men and women like you.”

Hundreds of people applied for the academy class. Fifty-six were seated and only 34 were able to make it through the 6-month training.

Cadet James Jung received the Top Cadet Award and delivered the valedictorian address to the cadets. Eric Percival received the Top Gun award and AFD arson investigator Randolph Doughty was acknowledged for being the most physically fit.
