Albuquerque Joins Cities Nationwide for America's National Night Out Against Crime ~ Tuesday, August 5, 2014
On Tuesday, August 5th, neighborhoods throughout Albuquerque are being invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the "31st Annual National Night Out” (NNO) crime and drug prevention event. National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored locally by the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) and the APD Crime Prevention Unit, will involve over 10,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. In all, over 30 million people are expected to participate in ‘America’s Night Out Against Crime on August 5th. NNO 2014 is being supported in part by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance.
National Night Out is designed to: (1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; (4) Renew old acquaintances and establish new friendships by getting to know your neighbor; and (5) Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
On August 5th, residents in neighborhoods throughout Albuquerque and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police. Many neighborhoods throughout Albuquerque will be hosting a variety of special events such as block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from police, flashlight walks, contests, youth activities and anti-crime rallies.
The Albuquerque Police Department is inviting all blocks organized in the Neighborhood Watch Program and Neighborhood Associations to join together to send a message to criminals that their community is fighting back against crime, gangs and drugs. We have asked each community group to organize a potluck, party or other social event for the people in their area. We have also provided lists of those events to City officials, Area Commands and Crime Prevention personnel so they can attend as many individual events as possible.
National Night Out is an excellent opportunity for neighbors to socialize, renew acquaintances, welcome new neighbors and join fellow citizens in our community’s fight against crime and our pursuit of a high quality of life. Plan to join us once again for another fun and enjoyable citywide celebration.
