Mayor Richard J. Berry recognized on Friday four Albuquerque police officers for saving the lives of two women who were trying to get a gun away from a suicidal family member.

Officers Dain Symes, Timothy Apodaca, Daniel Galvan, and Harold Sennett were named this week’s Friday’s Heroes.  Each week Mayor Richard J. Berry recognizes at least one public safety employee who goes above the call of duty.

On Nov. 27, Officers Symes, Apodaca, Galvan, and Sennett were dispatched to the 9000 block of Aztec Road NE on a domestic violence call. The 911 caller said there was a man armed with a gun and involved in an altercation with the two female family members.

Prior to arriving, officers received information that shots had been fired inside the home  Just as they arrived, the officers heard a gun shot and the two women screaming inside.

The officers rushed to the scene and found the two women struggling and wrestling on the street with the suspect, who was holding the semi-automatic handgun in his hand. The gun had been fired at least twice, striking one of the two women. The woman’s injuries were minor.

The officers attempted to safely remove the handgun from the suspect but he would not relinquish his grip. Officer Galvan was forced to use his TAZER on the suspect four times before he released the weapon.  The officers then took custody of the suspect.

“These officers bravely engaged in a very dangerous situation involving an active shooter in order to ensure the safety of the two women,” said Mayor Berry.  “They managed to gain control of the subject while avoiding serious injury to any of the parties.”
