Full-Scale Disaster to be Simulated in Albuquerque this Weekend
July 19th, 2013
Albuquerque - Local first responders will be preparing for the worst this weekend as they simulate an earthquake in the city of Albuquerque.
The NM Urban Search and Rescue Task Force, the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Albuquerque Fire Department, Albuquerque Police Department, the NM Disaster Medical Assistance Team, and the Albuquerque Office of Emergency Management will be conducting the two-day exercise which will simulate an occupied building collapse.
During the staged disaster, first responders will have to search the rubble for victims and figure out how to extract, triage and get them medical attention.
“This is a great opportunity for the coordination of local, state and federal assets to be part of a comprehensive training and exercising program that prepares our community for any emergency disaster scenario,” said Roger Ebner, Director for the Albuquerque Police Department Office of Emergency Management.
The disaster exercise will begin at 8:00 a.m. Saturday and end at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday and will be conducted at 5880 Office NE. The City will provide shelters, accessories, generators, cots and radios. Volunteer members of the Albuquerque Police Department and Albuquerque Fire Department will play a significant role in this disaster simulation.
