Albuquerque — Albuquerque Police will be out in full force this Fourth of July cracking down on drunk drivers.

More than 24 extra officers will be working Wednesday exclusively looking for intoxicated motorists. There will also be as many as 19 additional officers on DWI patrol the days after the holiday and throughout the weekend. At least two checkpoint will be conducted sometime during the Holiday week.

“We want everyone to enjoy the holiday this weekend and be safe,” Mayor Richard J. Berry said. “Our hope is that we do not have to take anyone to jail.”

Last Fourth of July, there were 13 people arrested on DWI charges in Bernalillo County.

Albuquerque Police Deputy Police Chief Allen Banks encouraged people who are considering drinking this holiday to call the Bernalillo County Safe Ride program at 242-RIDE.

“There are so many services out there to prevent people from driving intoxicated,” Banks said. “There are no excuses.”

Deputy Chief Banks also reminded citizens that APD will be working with the Fire Department to notify them of any illegal use of fireworks during the holiday

Anyone who is caught with illegal fireworks will be cited, will have their fireworks confiscated and face up to a $500 fine and 90 days in jail.
