APD Creates Course for APS High School Seniors

Eligible Students Invited to Informational Meeting on July 15, 2013

The Albuquerque Police Department is forming a partnership with APS to offer a program where students can participate in the training courses required to function as a Police Service Aide (PSA) while in high school.

APD will offer a class for high school students at the APS career enrichment center for high school seniors who are interested in working as a Police Service Aid after graduation. The class will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00-5:30 at the APS career enrichment center (CEC) for both semesters in the upcoming academic year.  Students will earn Internship elective credit for this class from The CEC.

The program will provide each student with the classroom knowledge and practical skills necessary to function as a PSA. Classroom instruction areas include the criminal justice system, law, physical fitness, patrol and traffic investigations. The classes will be taught by a Police Academy certified instructor.  Upon successful completion of the program the student will be eligible to apply for a PSA position that consists of assisting officers on patrol with traffic accidents, misdemeanor offences, parking enforcement and many other duties and responsibilities. The PSA program will allow students to learn about the Albuquerque Police department’s policies and procedures prior to entering the Police Academy as a cadet.

There will be an informational meeting on July 15th at 6pm at the Roger A. Hoisington Training Academy 5412 2nd St. NW Albuquerque NM, 87107 for all interested APS seniors who are eligible for the program..

Please contact Michael Lombardi (lombardi@aps.edu) or counselor Lynn Ramsey (ramsey_l@aps.edu), if you have any questions about this program.
