ALBUQUERQUE - The city’s H1N1 hotline was inundated with calls Tuesday and some callers got a busy signal.

In response, the city’s 311 center is now equipped to take calls. People are still encouraged to call the city’s H1N1 hotline first at 833-6860.

The 311 agents will be taking callers’ names and phone numbers and a return call will be made from the H1N1 call center.

The city opened the H1N1 hotline earlier this week to take appointments for people who want to get vaccinations at a New Mexico Department of Health Clinic on Saturday. About 4,000 vaccinations are available. Albuquerque firefighters, paramedics and emergency medical technicians are staffing the H1N1 call center.

The call center was flooded Tuesday with phone calls from people who don’t qualify to get the vaccine yet thus causing the busy signals.

Appointments can be scheduled for those who fit the following:

    • Pregnant women
    • Anyone 6 months to 24 years old
    • Anyone  25 to 64 with chronic health conditions - such as asthma, diabetes and heart disease
    • Care givers of infants less than six months old

Vaccinations will be provided for those who don’t yet qualify at a later date. They are encouraged to call the call center next week.

The 311 agents will be taking callers’ names and phone numbers and a return call will be made from the H1N1 call center.
