Suspect Charges Residents and Officers with Vehicle to Escape SWAT Perimeter

Christopher Sosa, 20

By Officer Tasia Martinez

On 12/17/2012 at approximately 3:15 p.m. officers were dispatched to 2920 Shirley NE in reference to a reported residential burglary in process.  The caller was a concerned neighbor who stated that he saw individuals climbing into a basement window of the home and who also told police he knew his neighbor to live alone.  After preliminary investigation, officers discovered that there was not a residential burglary in process and spoke with the homeowner who was present inside the home, Carolyn Chavez.  Chavez then told officers that there was an unwanted male inside her home who she identified as Christopher Sosa, 20.  Officers heard footsteps in the attic inside the home.  Information was received that Sosa was known to be armed and officers confirmed that Sosa is wanted on felony warrants. Officers conducted PA announcements with no cooperation from Sosa.

At approximately 7:00 p.m. the suspect believed to be Sosa opened the garage door of the home and fled the area at a high rate of speed, stealing Chavez’s vehicle, purse and cell phone.  As Sosa fled he drove the vehicle in the direction of police and residents who were on the outer perimeter of the scene, charging directly at Officer Randall White who was standing by his vehicle at his perimeter post.  As Sosa drove at Officer White, Officer White fired his weapon at the charging vehicle in effort to prevent the suspect from running him over.  The vehicle then drove around Officer White’s vehicle, onto the pedestrian sidewalk to breach the perimeter.

The suspect fled in a Green 2005 Toyota Camry.  Detectives continue their active search for Sosa.

Detective have received information from witnesses who have seen Christopher Sosa since the incident occurred and received report that Sosa is not injured and is actively evading police capture.

Officers are relieved to report that no residents or officers were injured in this incident.

Christopher Sosa is known to be armed and dangerous and has a criminal and probation history including armed robbery charges.  APD is asking if anyone has information regarding Sosa’s whereabouts that they contact 242-COPS or Crime Stoppers at 843-STOP.  APD would also like to encourage Sosa to turn himself in peacefully.
