No Officers Hurt as Shooter is Taken Into Custody
Albuquerque Police Valley Field Officers arrested Jason Halverson, 27, early Thursday morning after he fired shots at officers. The call came in just after 2:00 a.m. and officers responded to reports of a man, later identified as Halverson, damaging windows at a residence located at 524 ½ Candelaria Rd NW. When officers arrived, Halverson retrieved a rifle from the trunk of his car and ran back into the residence. Officers standing outside of the house issued verbal commands for Halverson to exit peacefully. Halverson was heard shouting at officers from inside the residence and then Halverson fired his rifle 4 times in the direction of officers. Fearing for their lives, the officers took cover and continued to issue audible commands for Halverson to exit. Halverson eventually exited the residence without the rifle and was safely taken into custody.
Halverson was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and battery on a peace officer with a deadly weapon. Today he is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center on an $80,000 cash or surety bond.
The officers who responded to the call were not injured.
