Albuquerque Police Chief Ray Schultz shaped the face of the department Friday by promoting two commanders, two lieutenants and four sergeants.
Those promoted included Commanders Robert Huntsman and Mac Page; Lieutenants Kevin Rowe and Roger Banez; and Sergeants Jennifer Garcia, Michael Gutierrez, Lena Deyapp and Monte Curtis.
Huntsman will oversee APD’s Northeast Area Command and Curtis will take over the Southwest Area.
Both are veteran officers with more than 40 years of law enforcement experience.
“Page and Huntsman are two of our finest officers,” Chief Schultz said. “They will serve the citizens of these areas well.”
Robert Huntsman began his career with the Albuquerque Police Department in the summer of 1983. Robert’s enthusiasm for new challenges and strong leadership skills have proven priceless in so many areas of the department. As an officer, he spent four years as a patrolman and one year as a detective in the northeast. After being promoted to sergeant in 1988, Robert became a supervisor for the fugitive detail in the court services unit. Following this assignment, he returned to the northeast briefly and then in 1991 he became the sergeant for the academy’s basic training division. In 1993, Robert was promoted to lieutenant and again returned to the FSB until 2000 when he became the tactical support lieutenant. For the past 10 years, he has devoted his time and expertise to the efficient operation of the department’s bomb squad, horse mounted unit, air support section, swat team, and k9 unit.
Bob is a native of Albuquerque and attended El Dorado High School prior to pursuing higher education at both New Mexico State University and the University of New Mexico. He is an active member of Saint Stevens United Methodist Church and enjoys golf and motorcycle rides with his “old” retired APD friends. He has been married to his wife, Jackie, for 27 years and they have two children. Aside from his never-ending commitment to his wife and children, Robert is also proud of his 27 years of service to our department.
A native New Mexican, Mac Page, graduated from Moriarty High School. Furthering his education, he went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in occupational education in November 2003. He is also a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command.
Mac graduated from the Albuquerque Police Department’s 65th cadet class in June of 1990. He was promoted to sergeant in 1999 and lieutenant in 2006. Mac has worked in every area command. He was also assigned to the Northeast property crimes and violent crimes units. As a sergeant, Mac served as a field investigator. He was also assigned to criminalistics as a lieutenant. Prior to his promotion today, Mac was assigned to operations review in the chief’s office.
Mac is married to Amy and they have three daughters. In Mac’s spare time, he enjoys fly-fishing, reading and mountain biking.
A native of Chicago, Kevin Rowe moved to Albuquerque from Omaha, Nebraska, where he served eleven years with the Omaha Police Department. In August of 1996, Kevin began his career with the Albuquerque Police Department. As a patrol officer, Kevin was assigned to the Southeast area command. He also served as a detective in the Westside property and violent crimes units, as well as the polygraph and burglary units. As a sergeant, Kevin supervised valley area command’s team 9. His assignment prior to today was the white collar crimes unit sergeant. He is proud to have created and developed a metro white collar crimes forensic auditor intern program between APD, BCSO, and UNM's Anderson School of Business.
Among his many accomplishments throughout his law enforcement career, Kevin takes great pride in his nomination as National Black Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.
Kevin is married to Kathy. Kevin’s musical talents include singing, as well as the ability to play six musical instruments. He also enjoys martial arts and basketball.
An ordained deacon with the Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, Kevin mentors youth within the community.
A native of Guam, Roger Banez, attended George Washington High School. In 1986, he obtained a bachelors degree in psychology from the University of Hawaii. Roger received his MBA from the University of Phoenix.
Roger entered the Albuquerque Police Department in October of 1993. He was a member of both the first emergency response team, as well as the first crisis intervention team. Roger was promoted to sergeant on April 26, 2009. As a sergeant, he was assigned to both the DWI unit, as well as the Foothills impact team.
Roger joined the New Mexico National Guard after moving here from Hawaii and retired from the Army as a lieutenant colonel, after serving 24 years. He is extremely proud to have had the opportunity to serve his country.
Roger has been married to his wife Vivian for almost 24 years.
When he is not working for the department, Roger enjoys working on computers, cars, or anything else his wife puts him to work on.
Beginning her career with the Albuquerque Police Department as a cadet in the 87th cadet class, Jennifer Garcia, graduated in February of 2003 from the police academy. Upon graduation, she served the field services bureau in the Southeast area command. She was also assigned to the criminal investigations bureau as a crime scene detective. Jennifer’s most recent assignment was in the chief’s office, working in operations review. She has been active in the department by serving on APD's honor guard, dive team and search and rescue team.
Jennifer is married to Commander Eric Garcia. In her spare time, she enjoys running, cycling, and weight-training. She has completed several half marathons, as well as one complete marathon. She has also represented the department in the Baker to Vegas challenge cup relay. Jennifer also recently finished her first sprint triathlon.
A graduate of West Mesa High School, Jennifer attended the University of New Mexico, where she obtained a bachelors degree in psychology. She went on to further her education and received a master’s degree in counseling and guidance from New Mexico Highlands University.
A native New Mexican, Michael Gutierrez, is a 1988 graduate of Bernalillo High School. He is currently pursuing a degree from the University of New Mexico. He is a current member of the 150th Security Forces Squadron with the New Mexico Air National Guard. He served two tours in the Middle East with the Air National Guard.
Michael came to the Albuquerque Police Department in 2001, after serving with the Bernalillo Police Department. He has spent his entire career in the field services bureau, where he has also been a field training officer. In his law enforcement career, he has received the following awards: Most Motivated Officer of the Year and Top Cop of the Year.
In his spare time, Michael enjoys boating, working out and traveling.
Beginning her career with the Albuquerque police department in July of 2001, Lena Deyapp, spent seven years in the field services bureau. She has also been assigned to the criminal nuisance abatement and internal affairs unit. Lena served on APD’s honor guard, as well as the emergency response team.
A native New Mexican, Lena is a 1997 graduate of La Cueva High School.
Lena enjoys working out and especially spending time with her daughter.
Monte Curtis was born in Rapid City, South Dakota and moved to Fort Walton Beach, Florida when he was 13 years old.
He joined the United States Air Force after graduating from high school. He served as a security policeman and canine handler for eight years. In that capacity, Monte assisted DEA in drug suppression. He also assisted ATF and the U.S. Secret Service with explosive detection. He separated from the Air Force at the rank of sergeant.
Monte joined the Albuquerque Police Department in November of 1993. As a detective, he was assigned to the Northeast impact and Foothills impact teams. He was also a member of the burglary and sex crimes units. In special investigations, Monte was a member of the narcotics unit canine team. In May of 2002, he was named detective of the month.
Married to Dawn, they are the parents to four children.
