On August 23,
1972, at approximately 4:29 a.m., Albuquerque police
located a white, 1963 Dodge van parked on I-40 eastbound
near the Lomas overpass. The emergency flashers were on.
A deceased male, later identified as Ronald M. Thaisen,
a 25 year old Marine Corps sergeant, was found inside
the van.
Sergeant
Thaisen died of blunt force injuries. He had been dead
several hours before discovery. Sergeant Thaisen had
left Riverside, California on August 21, 1972. He was
traveling to North Carolina. The following morning,

Thaisen made a cryptic telephone call to a relative. He
told a family member that he was giving three
hitchhikers a ride. About 4 hours later, witnesses had
seen Sergeant Thaisen's Dodge van parked on I-40. Three
hippie type males were removing items from the rear.
Investigator's learned that a Ricoh 35 mm camera and
several $20 American Express Travelers Cheques had been
