On Friday, Mayor Richard J. Berry named Albuquerque Police Officer Jon O’Guin “Friday’s Hero” for his capture of two bank robbery suspects.
Late last week Officer O’Guin was off-duty and driving home after a Metro Court hearing when he heard over the radio the description of a vehicle used in a bank robbery which had occurred just minutes prior. The vehicle was described as a red, older model Ford Escort. Always on the alert, Officer O’Guin kept an eye out for a vehicle matching that description.
As he was driving in the area of Montgomery near Monroe, Officer O’Guin spotted a vehicle that very closely matched the description of the suspect vehicle. He made a U-turn in order to catch up with the vehicle and secured additional units to assist. A high risk traffic stop was conducted and the offenders were taken into custody after being positively identified by witnesses to the bank robbery. The money was recovered and the suspects were turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
“This just goes to show you that our dedicated police personnel are never truly ‘off the clock’,” stated Mayor Berry. “Officer O’Guin was deliberate in seeking out these potentially dangerous offenders and because of his actions, they will be held accountable for their crimes.”
