Individuals
conducting business within the City of Albuquerque must register
with the Zoning Code Services division of the Planning Department,
located at 600 2nd St., NW. Before visiting the Zoning office to
obtain a business license, the applicant needs to get a state tax
ID number. This tax number can be obtained at the New Mexico Taxation
and Revenue Department, located on the 11th floor of the First Security
Bank building at San Mateo Blvd. and Central Ave. For information,
call (505)841-6200.
In order to receive approval from Zoning, the business must be located in the proper zone category. Businesses operating within the home are permissable as long as the home occupation meets the standards established to ensure that the business will not negatively impact the surrounding residential neighborhood. As a general rule, home occupations may not sell, display, or manufacture on the premises. There may not be any external evidence of the business at the residence, and the primary use of the house must be for living purposes.
Commercial business registration regulations vary from zone type to zone type. Uses allowed in each zone category can be found in the Albuquerque Comprehensive Zoning Code. A copy of the Zoning Code can also be obtained from the Planning Department. The main Planning office is located on the 3rd floor of the Plaza Del Sol building. Both the Zoning office and the main Planning office are open during regular business hours Monday through Friday.
More information about business licenses and registration is available on the City of Albuquerque's Treasury division web page. For information about zoning regulations affecting business registration, contact the Zoning Code Services division at (505)924-3850.
